Rocawear turned up this Summer and featured Charlamagne & DJ Envy of Power 105.1′s “Breakfast Club” in this season’s lookbook. The duo allowed us into their world and shared how they got into the business and what they are doing to stay on top. Shot by streetwear photographer extraordinaire, Tasha Bleu, Charlamagne Tha God and DJ Envy spoke candidly about their journey to date and what it consists of.
“I started off as an intern in 1998 when I was 17 at Z 93 JAMZ in Charleston, S.C.. I was an intern for about a year before I got hired in the promotions department and worked for about a year before I actually became an on air personality.” – Charlamagne Tha God
People sometimes think that these opportunities fall into the laps of the individuals who inspire them when in actuality, their journey is very similar to yours. DJ Envy mentioned what influenced him to start deejaying and we were surprised that it was a ROC Family member who did so… can you guess who?
“I got into deejaying by befriending DJ Clue. He was my neighbor and I would see him all the time in nice cars and sneakers, which as a kid I thought he sold drugs lol. So one day I asked him and he told me he was a DJ… instantly, I was intrigued. He invited me to his mother’s house to see his studio and from there I was hooked.” – DJ Envy
What inspires you to reach for more? With success, comes challenges but if your focused, you can push through. Envy shares “the hardest challenge is knowing when to get some rest. You can tell by looking at my Instagram page that whether its with my family, on the radio or in the club, I am always making moves. I find it hard to sit down…” and that’s real, honest and from the heart. We all want to be successful but have to try our best to ensure that our choices drive our next move.
Looking towards the future, Charlamagne wants the world to know “as one of the biggest multimedia personalities on the planet… television. movies, internet, radio, I plan to get behind the camera and produce shows. I will be one of those guys when you hear their name it means something like Ryan Seacrest, Steve Harvey, Bill O’ Reilly, Howard Stern, Wendy Williams…I will be in that number!”
